Los Angeles Unified School District is both a traditional school system and a choice-based system, which means ANY and EVERY student can choose to attend their neighborhood school of residence OR apply to schools of choice that offer specialized programs within the District.

Magnet
Magnet Programs vary by theme and are Court-Ordered voluntary integration opportunities available to students in grades K-12 living within the LAUSD boundaries.
  • October 4-November 10, 2016:

    Placements are announced


  • By April 2017:
    Parents must accept or decline their student(s’) Magnet placement(s) electronically via the parent registration website.

Permits With Transportation (PWT)
PWT is a voluntary integration program that provides students with experiences in integrated school settings.
Conservatory of Fine Arts

The Conservatory is a Saturday instructional program providing differentiated arts instruction in dance, drama, voice, and visual arts to students identified as talented in the arts and students recommended as having talent in the arts by their home schools.
  • The week of August 15:
    Letters with instructions to apply to the Conservatory will be sent to parents of active returning students and students who have been newly identified as gifted in the arts. (Students must reapply each year.)

  • August 22–September 9, 2016:
    Conservatory application period.

  • September 12–23, 2016:
    Conservatory enrollment invitation letters will be sent to parents of selected applicants. (Must have invitation letter to register.)

  • October 1, 2016:
    Registration for returning students.

  • October 8, 2016:
    Registration for new students.

  • October 15, 2016 –May 6, 2017:
    Regular program hours for all enrolled students.

Conservatory of Fine Arts
District K-12 Open Enrollment

Parents may apply for designated open enrollment seats at specific campuses with available seats.
  • May 2017:
    District K-12 Open Enrollment application period.


  • Early to mid-June, 2017:
    District K-12 Open Enrollment placements will be announced.

    Families must login to the parent registration website in order to accept or decline their placements.

Inter-District Permits
Inter-District permits allow parents from one school district to attend schools in another school district.

INCOMING INTER-DISTRICT PERMITS
(OPEN YEAR ROUND BEGINNING 2/1)
Incoming inter-district permit applications are requests to allow students that reside within the boundaries of a school district other than the LAUSD to attend a school within the LAUSD.

OUTGOING INTER-DISTRICT PERMITS (Application Period 2/1-4/30)
Outgoing inter-district permit applications are requests for students that reside within the boundaries of the LAUSD to attend a school outside of the LAUSD.
  • February 1st-April 30th:
    All requests are processed in the order received. Please allow 30 days from the date application is completed with ALL required documentation. You will receive a response by email (or mail if no email is provided).

Zones of Choice

Matriculating 8th grade students living within a Zones of Choice may rank their high school program selections.
  • Wednesday, February 1 – Tuesday, February 28, 2017:
    8th grade students living in the attendance area of a Zone of Choice must apply for high school enrollment to their respective Zone.

  • March 15 – March 31, 2017:
    Students/Families receive Assignment Letters and have the opportunity to Appeal their high school assignment if there is a valid reason.

  • April 17 – May 12, 2017:
    Students/Parents must submit an online application on this website or complete a One-Time Transfer paper application at the high school where the student is currently enrolled.

Zones Of
Choice
Zones of Choice One-Time Transfers

Students will have an opportunity to transfer between high schools within the same Zone once during the four (4) years of their high school career.
Open Enrollment - Romero Act

The Romero Act is a California law that allows students who would otherwise attend a “low achieving” school to access superior educational opportunities. Each year, the Romero Act establishes a list of 1,000 “low achieving” schools, and parents of students attending one of the 1,000 schools have the option to request a transfer to another school with a higher API. Transportation is not provided.
  • November -January
    Applications are accepted annually, November-January 1st. Parents will be notified in writing within 60 calendar days upon receipt of application.
