LAUSD offers Dual Language Education programs from Transitional Kindergarten (TK) to 12th grade. Designed for students to reach advanced levels of academic and language proficiency in both languages and gain cross-cultural understanding and competency.

All students living within and outside of LAUSD boundaries are eligible to apply. Students residing outside of LAUSD boundaries must obtain an Incoming Inter-District Permit upon accepting a placement.

All students benefit and thrive in Dual Language Education Programs especially English Learners who speak other languages.

Schools for Advanced Studies (SAS) is a designation given to resident K-12 schools for exemplary implementation of Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) services and support. The primary purpose of SAS is to establish and nurture gifted/talented demonstration sites at resident schools, in order to share innovative, equitable, and effective GATE practices Districtwide. By providing high-quality differentiated instruction with an emphasis on depth, complexity, acceleration and novelty, SAS sites offer high-level academic opportunities that meet the unique educational needs of K–12 gifted learners, identified in the Intellectual, High Achievement, Specific Academic, Creative and Leadership Ability categories or verified based on critical thinking/achievement.

Inter-District Permits

Inter-District permits allow parents from one school district to attend schools in another school district.

INCOMING INTER-DISTRICT PERMITS
(OPEN YEAR ROUND - BEGINNING February 1)
Incoming Inter-District Permit applications are requests to allow students that reside within the boundaries of a school district other than the LAUSD to attend a school within the LAUSD.

OUTGOING INTER-DISTRICT PERMITS
(Application Period 2/1 - 4/30)
Outgoing Inter-District permit applications are requests for students that reside within the boundaries of the LAUSD to attend a school outside of the LAUSD.

Affiliated Charter Schools

Affiliated Charter Schools are semi-autonomous District schools with instructional program flexibility to meet the needs of a diverse student population. Anyone outside of the resident attendance boundary can apply. Resident attendance boundary families should enroll directly at the school.

Zones of Choice (ZOC) icon

Zones of Choice (ZOC)

Matriculating 5th and 8th grade students residing within a Zones of Choice may rank their school options in order of preference.

Zones of Choice are identified as geographic areas comprised of multiple school options (middle schools and high schools). Based on your home address, your child’s home school will be one of the school options that make up your residential Zone of Choice. Students residing in a Zone of Choice are eligible to attend ANY school in the Zone.

ON-TIME TIMELINE 2020-21:
October 1 - November 15, 2019:
ALL matriculating 8th grade students living in a Zone of Choice will rank their high school options in the computer lab at their current middle school. Parents must approve and sign their child’s selections and return the form to the middle school.
NEW – Parents of matriculating 5th grade students residing in the South Gate Zone of Choice will rank their middle school options at their current elementary school sites or by using their Apply.Lausd.Net parent account to submit the online application.

District K-12 Open Enrollment icon

District K-12 Open Enrollment

Parents may apply for designated open enrollment seats at specific campuses with available seats. The list of participating schools will be available April 29th. The list of participating schools may change, year over year.

April 2020 - May 2020:
District K-12 Open Enrollment application period.
Early to mid-June, 2020:
District K-12 Open Enrollment placements will be announced.

Parents can accept or decline student placement(s) electronically by logging into their parent account or by calling the school site to accept placement.
Late Application Process:
Parents can submit a late District K-12 Open Enrollment application starting in mid-June. The school site will contact you directly if a seat becomes available.

Conservatory of Fine Arts icon

Conservatory of Fine Arts

The Conservatory is a Saturday supplemental instructional program providing differentiated arts instruction in dance, drama, voice, and visual arts to students identified as talented in the arts and students recommended as having talent in the arts by their home schools.

June 1–September 6, 2019:
Conservatory application period for students new to the Conservatory.
The week of August 12, 2019:
Letters with instructions to apply to the Conservatory will be sent to parents of students who have been newly identified as gifted in the arts.
September 9–20, 2019:
Conservatory enrollment invitation letters will be sent to parents of selected applicants. (Must have invitation letter to register.)
October 5, 2019:
Registration for returning students.
October 12, 2019:
Registration for new students.
October 19, 2019 – March 28, 2020:
Regular program hours for all enrolled students.
