How to Apply All students can easily apply to school choice programs by following three easy steps: Only after you apply, are selected, and accept admission to a program can you proceed to enroll.

On-time Applications

Students interested in applying for next school year:

  • Choices Programs & Zones of Choice accept on-time applications for the next school year beginning in October through mid-November, annually.
  • Open Enrollment accepts on-time applications for the next school year from late April to mid-May, annually.
  • Permit (Incoming) applications are accepted all year long, starting on February 1st for the next school year.
  • Conservatory of Fine Arts accepts applications June through August, annually.
Late Applications

Students interested in applying after the on-time application window for next school year:

  • Choices Programs & Zones of Choice accept late applications for the next school year beginning in February through mid-September, annually.
  • Open Enrollment accepts late applications for the next school year from early June through mid-September, annually.

Late applications are added to the school’s waitlist in the order received. The school will contact you if they have space and your child is next on the waitlist.

Current School Year

Students applying after the school year has started can apply using the late application and be added to the waitlist.

  • The Choices Late Application re-opens in December through mid-January for students interested in applying for the 2nd semester (excludes Permits With Transportation).

Explore our Choices Programs

Choices Programs provide students with a wide-range of educational opportunities throughout the District. Students can apply to multiple Choices programs and multiple schools within each program during our on-time and late application periods. On-time applications open in October for six weeks for the following Choices programs:

  • Unique Education Pathways
  • Affiliated Charter Schools
  • Magnet
  • Multilingual Multicultural Education
  • Permits With Transportation
  • Schools for Advanced Studies

CHOICES
Complete an Online Application

The online application is quick and easy to complete. It only requires an active email account. Parents and legal guardians of new or continuing students can start an application online.

  1. Click on the green “Apply” button to get started.
  2. Log in with your Parent Portal account or register with a new account.
  3. Complete the online application for each child. If you are applying on-time to Choices you can apply to multiple programs and schools on the same application.

Complete a Paper Application

Paper applications are also available at your neighborhood school, regional and central district offices, or public libraries. Mail paper applications before the application deadline to:

Accept

Accepting a placement: Only after you apply, are selected, and accept admission to one of these programs can you proceed to enrollment. Currently enrolled students will automatically matriculate after accepting a placement and do not re-enroll.

Enrolling in a placement: New-to-District students that applied online, were selected and accepted a placement may enroll using the same parent account through L.A. Unified’s enrollment portal or at the school site. Students that applied with a paper application must enroll at the school site.

Choices Programs

L.A. Unified wants to be the District of Choice for your family. Students that live outside L.A. Unified boundaries are eligible to apply for:

  • Affiliated Charters
  • Multilingual Multicultural Education Programs
  • Unique Education Pathways

Choices Programs provide students with a wide-range of educational opportunities. Students can apply to multiple Choices programs and schools during the on-time and late application periods. On-time applications open in October for six weeks and the late application begins on February 1st.

Inter-District Permits (Incoming)

For students who live outside District attendance boundaries. Incoming Inter-District permits are accepted all year long. Visit the Student Permits website for more information.

Designated Neighborhood Schools

Every child that is new to the District and lives within L.A. Unified boundaries can enroll in their neighborhood school at any time. To find your neighborhood school you can look up your home address in our Resident School Identifier, or start your registration online.

Intra-District Permit

Intra-district Permits may be granted for a student to attend a school in L.A. Unified other than the assigned School of Residence.
The Intra-district Permit application period is open all year long, starting on February 1st for the next school year. Permits may be issued at any time for the school year. To learn more or download the application, visit the Student Permits website or any LAUSD school. Intra-district Permit applications are submitted directly to the school.
